PORTA DEL SOL
Porta del Sol, The Doorway to the Sun, a region made up of high mountain villages and low coastal towns, with the peaceful Caribbean and the surf-washed Atlantic Ocean at its feet. Known for its beautiful sunsets, beaches, and dramatic contrasts Porta del Sol is made up of 17 municipalities.
More commonly known to visitors are the coastal towns that hug the western tip of the island from north to south: Quebradillas, Isabela, Aguadilla, Aguada, Rincón, Añasco, Hormigueros, Cabo Rojo, Lajas, and Guanica. Mayagüez, the metropolitan area of the western region is home to the Dr. Juan A. Rivero Zoo, a historic theater, a beautiful Plaza and a major campus of the University of Puerto Rico.
Besides the countless beaches there are two golf courses in Porta del Sol, one in Aguadilla and another in Cabo Rojo, three light houses (in Aguadilla, Rincon, and Cabo Rojo), some of the islands best resorts, and a diverse collection of small inns and guest houses, and restaurants.
While at Porta del Sol you may visit the Guanica Dry Forest, a World Biosphere Reserve, the Boquerón Wildlife Refuge Reserve in Cabo Rojo, and the Maricao and Guajataca forests. Visit the salt flats in Cabo Rojo, or the Galapagos of Puerto Rico, Mona Island, some 47 miles offshore.
Off the beaten path you will find the mountainous towns of San Sebastian, Las Marías, Maricao, Moca, San Germán, and Sabana Grande; Where you can see old coffee and sugar cane haciendas, winding country roads giving you beautiful photo opportunities of the interior mountains and distant seas, and plazas that will take you back to the Spanish colonial era.
