East Area
East from San Juan a day trip away there are about a dozen interesting towns not counting the island municipalities of Vieques and Culebra. Beginning at the far east corner of the island you will find Maunabo with its beautiful lighthouse. Yabucoa is Maunabo’s neighbor to the north easily reached by highway #3, there is a tunnel undergoing construction that will soon join these two towns. While at Yabucoa don’t forget to visit the old Hacienda Santa Lucía and La Lucía beach.
The largest city to the east is Humacao, home of one of the University of Puerto Rico’s campus, and Palmas del Mar, a planned community with two championship golf courses, tennis, hotels, restaurants, and its own marina. Heading west from Humacao you will find the colorful town of Las Piedras, known for its petroglyph decorated caves.
Juncos, once a sugar and tobacco producer is now a pharmaceutical center, while visiting town do not forget to stop by El Tenedor Restaurant to grab something to eat.
While you are on the east side on the island if you want to have the best seafood you must visit Naguabo, where the seafront restaurants will be expecting you. Naguabo’s neighboring town of Ceiba was the home to the large Naval Base until 2004, now it is known for its fishing and for hiking the Ceiba Forest.
For boating there is no better place than Fajardo, home to the largest marina in the Caribbean and the place to catch a ferry to Vieques and Culebra. Luquillo is known for its Blue Flag Monserrate Beach and the food kiosks lining the entrance to the beach. Rio Grande, the entrance to El Yunque Rainforest, houses several first-rate resorts, golf courses and beaches.
For a taste of Puerto Rico’s tradition of African and Taino folk art, music, and customs visit the town of Loiza. If thoroughbred racing is in the books for you do not forget to stop by Canovanas with the only thoroughbred racetrack in Puerto Rico. While at Canovanas go to The Outlet 66 Stores, an outlet stores mall with over 130 stores for your shopping delight.
